Euro-candidate to raise Dingle name issue with Minister

Speaking on Radio Kerry on May 12th, Ireland-South European electoral candidate, Senator Dan Boyle, has confirmed that he will raise the Dingle name issue with his party leader, Minister for the Environment, John Gormley. Green Party Senator Boyle recently met with representatives from the Dingle Business Chamber who raised concerns about the impact the change was having on the local economy. The official name An Daingean was introduced almost four years ago under the Place-names Order of the Official Languages Act, 2003, by Minister Eamon Ó Cuiv. In 2006, 93% of residents of the West Kerry town voted overwhelmingly in favour of changing the name of the town from An Daingean back to the bilingual names of Dingle and Daingean Uí Chúis.The legislation needed for the change has yet to be brought in as signs, including all new signage being produced by Kerry County Council, continue to indicate only An Daingean.
