Three Dingle men proved their commitment to their county last weekend by cycling from the gates of Páirc an Ághasaigh to the Hogan Stand in Croke Park, Dublin. Flying the flag proudly for Kerry on their bikes were local accountant Seán Ó Suilleabháin, engineer Jimmy Bambury and businessman Ricky Keane who left Dingle on Friday morning at 7am. John Ashe accompanied the men on their bikes as far as Inch, while Colm Bambury travelled with the pelaton all the way from Dingle to Dublin to provide support. The men stayed overnight in Roscrea before completing their amazing journey to the gates of the Hogan Stand at Croke Park at 1.30pm on Saturday afternoon where they were greeted by a large contingent from Dingle who had travelled to Dublin in advance of Sunday's big game against Tyrone. A reception was also held down the road at the Hogan Stand Bar, which is owned by Kathleen Ryan (who originally hails from Glens just outside Dingle) and her husband Phil. Despite the disappointment following Kerry's loss on Sunday, the trio were delighted with their achievement and are confident that the journey will encourage cycling in West Kerry. The trio are hoping to encourage cycling in the West Kerry region. A big hearted West Kerry teenager made the ultimate sacrifice last Friday (September 26th) as his lusious long head of red hair was shorn to raise funds for cancer research. Conchuir Ó Beaglaoi volunteered to take part in a fundraising head shave for cancer research in front of his class mates at Pobalscoil Chorca Dhuibhne in Dingle. The event opens a weekend of fundraising events for cancer research in West Kerry; following Conchuir's brave gesture on Friday, hundreds took to the hills to scale Mount Brandon in the annual Siuloid Leighis (Walk for the Cure), which was this year dedicated to the memory of local woman Bernie O'Connor. Bishop of Kerry Bill Murphy will performed a blessing at the foot of the mountain before the walk begins from Baile Breac (a few miles west of Dingle), to the summit. Former All-Ireland winning Kerry Captain Dara Ó Cinnéide as well as RTÉ's Eileen Whelan and legendary broadcaster Micheál Ó Muircheartaigh also took part. Following a successful three-week run in London last year and a subsequent production in America, On Raglan Road hits Irish shore, and indeed Dingle, this October. On Raglan Road, explores Irish poet Patrick Kavanagh’s obsession with his muse and inspiration, Hilda Moriarty. The play also details Kavanagh’s rivalry with another Irish writer of the time, Brendan Behan.Patrick Kavanagh was born in the village of Inniskeen, Co Monaghan, in 1904 and is now regarded as Ireland’s most important poet after WB Yeats. The son of a shoemaker and small farmer, he moved to Dublin in his mid thirties where he lived in poverty for most of his life, surviving on handouts, the occasional bit of journalism, but mostly being supported by his younger brother, Peter.On Raglan Road was originally a poem about his love affair with Hilda Moriarty, which was doomed from the start. Always a controversial figure, he was hated as much as loved in Dublin, and his long-running feud with Brendan Behan is well chronicled. Written by Waterford playwright Tom O’Brien, the play is full of pathos and is mixed with poetry and song. Gabriel Byrne to be honoured at Dingle Film Festival

Gabriel Byrne to receive the Inaugural Gregory Peck Award at Dingle Film Festival

The Dingle Film Festival have announced Gabriel Byrne as the first recipient of the Gregory Peck Award for Excellence in the Art of Film.

Gregory Peck once said the secret of film acting is complete candor with the audience, when you let them see the real you - and this perfectly captures the essence of Gabriel in his many roles and makes him an ideal choice for this new prestigious award said festival director Maurice Galway. Byrne, who is nominated for an Emmy Award for his role in HBO's In Treatment, will be in Dingle to receive the award during the festival, which runs from September 11 to September 14. It is an honour to accept the Gregory Peck Award in memory of a great actor whose work transcends time and continues to inspire said Gabriel Byrne.The award will be made in conjunction with Gregory Pecks family who are delighted that the award is being presented in Dingle.

"My fathers grandmother came from Dingle, his grand-uncle was the Hero, Thomas Ashe and any time he visited there, he always had a sense of coming home" says Pecks daughter Cecilia, "so the whole family is looking forward to attending the Dingle Film festival next month."

The festival has commissioned local artist John Holstead to design the award, which will be unveiled at the festivals opening reception in the Greenlane Gallery, Dingle on September 11th.

Kevin Moriarty, MD of Ardmore Studios, will present Gabriel Byrne with The Gregory Peck Award following a special screening of A Conversation with Gregory Peck on the Friday night of the festival in The Phoenix Cinema.

Its producer, Cecilia Peck and director Barbara Kopple will introduce the film to the audience.

Irish poet Medbh McGuckian has written a poem on Gregory Peck, which she will recite at the event.

Mr. Pecks wife, Veronique and son, Anthony will also be travelling from LA for this special occasion.

The festival will open with a screening of John Boynes best selling novel The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas.

Winner of the audience award at this years Sundance Film Festival, Ben Kingsleys new film The Wackness is sure to prove popular with the Dingle punters.

A huge hit with audiences at film festivals around the world and described by Rolling Stone Magazine as this years great rock movie, Anvil: The Story of Anvil documents the story of an ageing rock band, who refuse to give up on the dream of someday being big enough to play stadium rock.

Two time Oscar winner Barbara Kopple will present a masterclass on her documentary film Wild Man Blues. She will also present, along with co-director Cecilia Peck, the award winning film Shut Up & Sing .The screening will be followed by a Q&A with the two filmmakers.

Another Oscar winner and inventor of the Steadicam camera Garrett Brown will be on hand to talk about The Art of the Moving Camera while producer Ned Dowd Apocalypto, Last of the Mohicans wiill give a production masterclass on the classic American film noir State of Grace starring Sean Penn, Ed Harris and Gary Oldman. BAFTA and Grammy winning producer Anthony Wall will be bringing it all back to Dingle with two films on Bob Dylan Dylan in the Madhous and The Other Side of the Mirror, Dylan at the Newport Folk Festival 1963 -1965.A visual film progamme, curated by Maurice Galway for the Siamsa Gallery and Cork Film Centre will also be presended along with locally produced films, Beal Tuinne and Vinyl Frontier. To close the festival Cecilia Peck will introduce a special screening of her fathers definitive role as Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird for which he was awarded the Academy Award Oscar for Best Actor. Tour of Ireland cyclists prepare for for Limerick-Dingle Stage
The 2008 Tour of Ireland cycle race, which takes place from August 27th to 31st August, is set to zoom through Kerry as the fourth and fifth stages of the 900km five stage race will see 112 of the world's top cyclists hurtle through the county at breakneck speed. Beginning in Dublin on Wednesday August 27th, 16 top international cycling teams, including Tour De France Stage Winner Mark Cavendish, will tackle the first three stages of the race from Dublin to Waterford, Thurles to Loughrea and Ballinrobe to Galway City. The fourth stage, which commences on Saturday August 30th, will see the peloton create a colourful spectacle as competitors race from Clancy's Stand in Limerick City to Patrickswell, Adare, Rathkeale, Newcastlewest, Ardagh, Carrigkerry and across the county bounds into Athea at approximately midday.The action will continue on into Listowel (12.20), Finuge (12.28), Lixnaw, (12.35) Abbeydorney (12.45) and on into Tralee (12.54).The cyclists will then complete the difficult route from Tralee to Stradbally, over the 8km Category One climb over Connor Pass and on into Dingle (13.52).
The race continues from there on through West Kerry where the cyclists will face the mountainous terrains of the Gaeltacht tackling a 36km loop of Slea Head towards Dún Chaoin and back over the 185 metre climb over Mám Clasach. Events will then reach a thrilling climax as competitors head for a dramatic finish on
Dingle's Main Street at approximately 14.36. The final stage, Stage Five, will begin the following morning in Killarney on High Streed at 11:30am where cyclists will face the final stage on towards Glenflesk, Crohane across the county bounds into Baile Bhúirne and on towards the finish line in McCurtin Street in Cork City at approximately 3pm. RTE will feature nightly coverage of the Tour of Ireland which is being broadcast to millions of spectators across the world with ITV covering the event for the UK. TV networks in France, Scandinavia the USA and Asia will also carry the event and highlights of the race are set to be shown in South Africa and Asia.

Kilquane's Dáithí Ó Sé is set to delight his fans as he stars in a new TV series which will document his journey across America's Highway 61, America's highway of Blues, which begins on TG4 on Thursday September 11th at 9.30pm.

Building on the success of "Dáithí ar Route 66" which was aired last year, Dáithí now tackles America's second most famous road in the guise of Highway 61, America's 'Blues Highway'. The series will follow Dáithí as he begins his journey in New Orleans travelling through eight US states before reaching the Canadian border, encountering many unique and famous faces along the way including musical legends Kenny Rodgers, Chuck Berry, Ben E King, Percy Sledge and Paul Simon.

'Electric Dream' comes true for Dingle playwright

West Kerry players join Electric Picnic line-up

The talents of a young Dingle playwright and a group of West Kerry actresses will receive a national audience this Saturday as they take to the stage as part of the line-up of the eagerly anticipated boutique music festival, Electric Picnic in Stradbally, Co. Laois.
This years Electric Picnic line up includes the legendary Sex Pistols, Josh Ritter, Duffy, Goldfrapp, CSS, The Gossip, Franz Ferdinand and Nick Cave as well as host of Irish talent including Sineád O'Connor, Cathy Davey and Christy Moore. Teilifís na Fís, a comedic Irish language drama penned by Dingle playwright Rachel Ní Fhionnáin is set to be one of the festival highlights as it will be performed in the Irish tent. West Kerry amauter actresses, including Emma Ní Dhúbhlaing, Niamh Ní Chonchúir and Sorcha Ní Dhubháin, perform the play on Saturday August 30th at 3pm, joining the likes of comedian Des Bishop and Hector Ó hEogáin in the festival's Irish Tent.
Rachel's comedic drama, written entirely as Gaeilge, follows of hilarious events set in a hair salon.
"The play is based around the events that take place when a pompous ex-news reader comes in to have her hair done" explained Rachel, "the twist is that those working in the hair salon realise that they have more in common with the news reader than they would have liked!"

The play received great acclaim at Corca Dhuibhne drama festival, Féile Dramaíochta Feothneach, earlier this year where Rachel and the young actresses received an award. They went on to represent Kerry at Féile Naisiúnta Dramaíochta, the national Irish language drama festival, which was held in Limerick last May, debuting the play to a national audience at the Belltable Arts Centre. The play was widely lauded among critics and consequently the talented West Kerry players were invited to join the star-studded line up in the Irish Tent at Electric Picnic.
"It's so exciting" said Rachel, who is the daughter of local GP, Dr. Mícheál Ó Fainnín, who is also a celebrated poet and writer. "We were all hoping to go to Electric Picnic this year, but we never dreamed that we'd actually be performing at it!"

Future of the Blasket Islands discussed at An Díseart

The future of An Bhlascaod Mór (the Great Blasket) was up for discussion in Dingle this week as An Bórd Pleanála hosted an oral hearing regarding the island's future development at Institute of Education and Celtic Culture, An Díseart, on Tuesday August 5th and Wednesday August 6th. A decision on proposed plans by majority shareholder An Bhlaoscaod Mór Teoaranta (BMT) to construct a café and supporting facilities at the Island had been deferred by An Bórd Pleanála following a submissions made by a number of applleamnts since Kerry County Council initially granted the project planning last November. The construction of these dwellings however is paramount to the Government's plans to buy out the Island with the view towards developing the home of literary greats such as Peig Sayers, Tomás Ó Criothain and Muiris Ó Suilleabháin as a protected historic and national park. However the proposed dwellings have raised questions locally as some individuals feel that this route is not the best way forward in preserving what weaver Sue Redicon, (who lived and worked on the Great Blasket for 20 years), described as "the true essence of the Island" as the buildings would be two to three times larger than exisitng structures on the Island. Questions were also raised about the granting of exclusive commercial rights to BMT for ferry services, the café and supporting facilities and the co-dependence of the Government's plans upon the granting of planning persmission for the dwellings. Other issues were raised at the hearing by various concerned parties including environmental and ecological concern. On Wednesday Ásta Bowen of the Macaulay Library of Natural Sounds, Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, travelled from New York to Dingle to testify about findings that indicate sea-birds Manx Shearwaters are actually breeding in the village on Great Blasket. For the past 20 years, Government proposals on the future of the Island have progressed slowly.The Office of Public Works have been negotiating for many years on behalf of the Government and local supporters of the project to designate the Island as a National Historic Park. A budget of around €10 million was also allocated by the OPW last year for the Island's future preservation and development. It is, as of yet, unclear how this will now proceed given the fact that the plan was linked with the construction of BMT's café and supporting facilities with An Blascaod Mor Teo owning 17 of the 25 holdings on the island.

Matters are reaching new heights in Dingle as the area recently welcomed its first climbing wall which was unveiled at the Udarás Business Park in Ballinaboula by cliff and coastal rescuer, Mike O'Shea. With three walls, each incorporating different levels to suit the beginner to the advanced, the wall has already attracted some of Ireland's top climbers including Nigel Callender, John Harrison and Derek Carmody who travelled to Dingle to tackle the more difficult aspects of the wall. The initiative has caused a sensation locally with hundreds flocking to try out what began as an idea to train people to 'work at height'; an initiative set up by Mike, formerly of Kerry Mountain Rescue, currently with the Dingle Cliff and Coastal rescue. In developing a new centre he realised the potential a public access climbing wall would have in the area. "I always wanted to do something like this but could never find the right location. When this place came up it was perfect, this is the first of its kind, there is nothing of its size or scale anywhere else in the country" said Mike

If you’re a writer who’s hungry to learn more about your craft but can’t afford to take it further, Dingle Writing Courses may have the answer (www.dinglewritingcourses.ie).
In association with Kerry County Council, Dingle Writing Courses is offering one Kerry writer the chance to take an intensive weekend writing course this autumn, at a fraction of the normal fee.
The winner of the bursary will work with one of Ireland’s top writers in one of west Kerry’s most scenic spots. Tigh Aine sits on the tip of the Dingle Peninsula overlooking the magnificent Clothar Head and Strand, and in between tutoring sessions course participants are treated to stunning views and the best of home-cooked food.
The winner of the bursary can choose from one of the following courses:

Missing man found in Baile an bhFionnúrach

Gardaí in Dingle have paid tribute to rescue teams and volunteers following the discovery of the remains of a pensioner yesterday who had been missing in the Dingle area since last Friday.
80-year-old Tony Crickard from Belfast was reported missing last Friday when he failed to meet up with family friends as arranged.
Mr Crickard had travelled to the county to attend the funeral of his grand-nephew Shane Crickard of Ballyduff who died in a road crash last week.
Gardaí confirmed that search teams discovered Mr Crickard's remains around 2pm in a field at Baile an bhFionnúrach, at the foot of Mount Brandon.
The last confirmed sighting of Mr Crickard was at Cuas Pier, Brandon Creek at approximately eight thirty on Friday night.
The body was removed from the scene and brought to Kerry General Hospital for post mortem.
The Civil Defense, Dingle Coast and Cliff Resuce and many others have been searching for Mr. Crickard for days.
Sergeant Joe Joyce is thanking all those who took part in the search for Mr Crickard.

Night has fallen...

Without giving too much away, The Dark Knight is an amazing film. Heath Ledger's Joker is magnificent in the performance of the year (if not the decade). Without a doubt, the best Batman movie ever made, renders the Michael Keaton/Val Kilmer/George Clooney franchise as irrelevant. And what of Jack Nicholson's Joker? ... a distance memory of a ridiculous pantomime, Heath Ledger's portrayal is the new benchmark in Christopher Nolan's masterpiece.

Dingle - Tokyo...on a bike!

From Dingle to Japan...on a bike!

Father and son team begin 10,000 mile cycle from Dingle to Tokyo

A father and son team embarked on the adventure of a lifetime last Saturday morning (Saturday, July 26th) as they set off from Dingle, with the intention of cycling all the way to Tokyo, Japan!
Mark Swain (50) and his son Sam (18) left Commenouel, Dún Chaoin at 9.30pm, cycling through Ventry until they reached Dingle where they did a lap of the town.
From there it was on through Kerry, Cork and Waterford on their way to the Ferry in Rosslare.
After arriving in England they will traverse the country, gaining access to France and Mainland Europe via the Channel Tunnel.
The two bravados will then venture though France, Germany, Austria, Bulgaria, Turkey, Iran, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Thailand, Cambodia, Laos, China and finally take the ferry which will bring them to the Island of Japan whereupon they will reach their destination in Tokyo.
The fearless twosome estimates that the route will encompass over 10,000 miles and take almost a year. They may have to alter their route accordingly as there are some countries, such as Burma, which do not allow entry.
According to Mark, this trip has been in the pipeline for almost eight years as when his son Sam was ten years old he asked how long would it take to cycle to Japan.
"Year in, year out he would ask me about cycling to Japan when his birthday came around" explained Mark, "I was impressed by his attitude and insistence about completing this tumultuous task. As subsequent birthdays passed, his persistence continued so I decided to do something about it!" 2008 saw San turn 18 and Mark reach the milestone age of 50.
"Both of us are at landmark ages in our lives to we decided that 2008 was the perfect year to do this!" said Mark. "Dingle and West Kerry is the perfect place to start, we are in the furthermost western point in Europe and we endeavour to reach the eastern reaches of Japan" Mark added.
Mark and Sam will also raise funds for the Rising Sun Domestic Violence Project during their travels.

Introduction to Eastern religion and philosophy takes place in Dingle's Diseart
Eastern and Western spirituality combined this weekend as Dingle's Diseart, the centre of Celtic Spirituality and Learning founded within the walls of the old Catholic Convent building (which is adjacent to St. Mary's Church), became the location for a lecture in the practice of Buddhism.
Buddhism is a way of life and philosophy which revolves around Buddha, who gave methods to his followers by which full enlightenment may be attained through practices such as meditation.
An Diseart, established by former Dingle Canon and Maynooth Professor, Monsignor Pádraig Ó Fiannachta, is renowned for the world famous Harry Clarke windows situated in the buildings Catholic Church. The centre hosted Buddhist, Christian Bosel-Hamke, who delivered a lecture entitled 'Freedom of Mind' – An Introduction to Tibetan Buddhism.
Christian Bosel-Hamke is a student of famed Danish Buddhist teacher, Lama Ole Nydahl who already established over 550 meditation and study centres all over the world.
Lama Ole is renowned for his meditation courses, such as the study of Phowa (conscious dying) a meditation to be used at the moment of death.

Naomhóg masters tackle the ocean waves at Ventry Regatta

The sun came out to play in Ventry on Sunday July 20th, as crowds converged on the West Kerry village to enjoy the the annual Naomhóg rowing meet, Regatta Fionn Trá.
Competitors of all ages from the Maharees, Dingle and the West Kerry Gaeltacht took the ocean waves once again, a tradition which is a great source of local pride. The familiar site of the Namohóg, which from a distance look like black beetles, was visible on the pier from 2pm with a full race card catering for all age groups.
The first race was the U-18 meet with Roisín Breathnach, Laura Kavanagh, Liam Flannery and Cathal Breathneach first past the post.
This was followed by the eagerly anticipated Rás Mór na bhfear, the Four-handed mens'race which saw the men of the Maharees, Jackie Goodwin, Danny Scanlon, Kieran Browne and Frank Hussey stamp their authority on the event once again this year.
The U-12 race, one of the highlight for the younger children taking part proved to be a great success with Brian Devine, Gearóid Breathneach, Meghan Flannery and Kelly Cooke of Cumann Ramhaíochta Corca Dhuibhne emerging as top dogs as they sailed into first place.
The eagerly anticipated Rás Mór na mBan, the four- handed ladies'race proved itself to be one of the afternoon's highlights with winners, local rowing stalwats Monza Heidke, Denise O'Sullivan, Tara Follan and Michelle Kennedy showing the men how things are done in West Kerry! Kevin Granville, Eoin Griffin, Louise O'Brien and Kate Sullivan were victorious in the U-16 meet while the combination of Jackie Goodwin and Eileen Quirke proved a winning formula in the Rás Fear & Bean, the one man, one woman race. The Rás Meascaithe, a mixed race for two men and two women, with names drawn from a hat drew the day's racing to a close with Eimear Galvin, Jane Fitzgerald, Kieran Browne and Jackie Goodwin taking first place.

West Kerry Agricultural Show celebrates 43 years

The crowds ascended on the Dingle Mart Grounds on Sunday, July 20th, to enjoy the 43rd Annual West Kerry Agricultural Show, habitually one of the highlights of the summer in Corca Dhuibhne. Good weather blessed the event once again this year which saw locals and people from all parts of Ireland and beyond enjoy the many activities and displays on show. Attending the show this year was Minister of State for Agriculture, Tony Kileen TD who was on hand to present the days award the winners of the traditional cattle, sheep, horse and sheep sections. Also spotted among the crowd, enjoying the day's events with his family was RTE Presenter John Kelly
Some of the country's best livestock was on display this year in the various animal classes with €20,000 prize fund up for grabs. The Champion Awards for Best Dairy Cow went to Peter Kennelly of Ardfert and Giles Hoffman of Annascaul (in the confined classes). Champion Pony of Show also went Ardfert's way, as it was awarded to Inviren Boy owned by Carmel Joyce. The Champion Horse of Show Award stayed local this year, awarded to John Ashe of Chapel Lane, Dingle.
Two Cork men grasped the Jim Rohan Memorial Cup for Best Scotch Yearling Ram this year as Pat and his son Dan O'Leary will bring the cup back home to Bantry this year. Maintaining a local profile at the event was brother of GAA stars Darragh, Tomás and Marc, Feargal Ó Sé of Árd a'Bhothair who was awarded the cup for Best Overall Low Land Class.
There was plenty talent on display at the show with an Irish dancing display by Rinceoirí na Ríochta and live music from Banna Ceoil Lios Póil. The arts and crafts section of the show displayed an array of talent while the cute, peachy faces of the Bonny Baby show drew gasps of 'ooh' and 'aww' from onlookers. Horticulture and home-baking also left an impression with those attending the show with special mention to Eileen Breathneach who received a special prize for her outstanding Homemade Apple Pie. Best Dressed Lady Mairín Uí Chearna and Granny Gaelach recipient Josie Bean Uí Bairóid also lent an air of glamour to the day's proceedings.

Bishop issues several change of appointments in West Kerry area
Dingle's loss is the become Ballyferriter's gain later this month as Rev. Fr. Eugene Kiely of Dingle is to be appointed Parish Priest of the Baile an Fheirteáraigh parish under the changes announced by Bishop of Kerry Bill Murphy last weekend. Fr. Kiely, a Cork man by heritage, has become a central part of the local parish community in Dingle; his spiritual devotion and kind, gentle demeanor endearing him to many. He took a great interest in the Divine Mercy and Our Lady of Fatima organising local devotions at various churches in the community. He was also a board member of national school Scoil an Ghleanna, which opened its new buildings last week. Fr. Kiely was also an avid Gaelgóir professing an exacting fluency in the Irish language. "Fr. Kiely has been a wonderful asset to the local community here" said one parishioner, "we are very sad to see him go but wish him well in his new appointment as parish priest in Ballyferriter." Several changes of appointment were announced this weekend to the Clergy Corca Dhuibhne Deanery, which will come into effect on Wednesday July 23rd.
Baile an Fheirteáraigh Parish Priest, the very Rev. Gearóid Godley is to be appointed Co-Ordinator of the Diocesan Pastoral Strategic Plan. The very Rev. Brendan Walsh, Parish Priest Annascaul is to become the Parish Priest of Causeway with the very Rev. John Buckely, P.P. Tuosist to come to Annascaul in his stead. Rev. Bernard Healy returns from post-graduate studies at the Pontifical Gregorian University, Rome to become a curate in Dingle alongside the Canon Fr. Thomas Looney. Rev. Sean Sheehy, Diocese of Baton Rouge, Louisiana, USA is come to West Kerry to minister pro tem in Castlegregory parish with Canon Thomas Looney. When you meet sculptor, Anthony Scott’s life-size bronze horse, Labharacam, the centerpiece of his forthcoming exhibition at the Greenlane Gallery, Dingle (5 – 30 July 2008), its like all of his previous work has come into its proper dimensions, and that his older, smaller horse sculptures have been a rehearsal.
This exhibition also sees an exciting new body of work by West Kerry Coast artist, Tomás O'Ciobháin . While O’Ciobháin continues his fascination with the land and seascapes that surround him, often from extremely vertiginous perspectives, it is in an increasingly abstract manner and with a lighter touch.
O'Cíobháin’s daughter, Aine, will also show some of her work at the forthcoming exhibition. Aine concentrates on night-time urban landscapes. Her years immersed in the grimey, urban world of night-shoots, give her paintings an urgency and authenticity ripped from the streets.

Festivities as Dingle's most famous resident celebrates 25 years in his adopted home


There was a great cause of celebration in Dingle last Satuday as visitors and locals alike came together to pay homage to Dingle's most famous resident, Fungie the Dingle Dolphin, who this year celebrates his 25th year in his home in Dingle Harbour. Local fishermen and boat operators dressed up as pirates, offering trips to see Fungie in all his glory as he played and frolicked in the June sunshine last Saturday and Sunday. The wild bottle nose dolphin settled in Dingle in the 1980s and since then has become a regular fixture.
His exploits first came to the attention of fishermen when this dolphin began to play, jump and frolic with the boats out in the harbour.
Divers, water sports enthusiasts and local marine experts soon realised that this was no ordinary dolphin due to his playful and friendly demeanor and soon thousands began to flock to the town to witness the spectacle for themselves.
Local fishermen soon organised boat trips to go and visit with Fungie who failed to disappoint down through the years, delighting the countless numbers who made the trip out into the harbour to see him play and jump around the boats. Distinctively marked, Fungie has established himself in the hearts of Dingle's residents. Dolphins and whales are no strangers to Kerry's coastline as many come to its bountiful seas every year however there is no other documented account of a wild dolphin staying in the same place for so long.
Fungie has always been extremely friendly with humans displaying a unique personality. Despite his immense size as a fully mature bottle nose male dolphin, people have been amazed by his gentleness around children and the infirm. It is understood he shelters in some of the caves at the mouth of the harbour during stormy weather and often flanks ships and boats as they leave Dingle. He has also provided a major economic boost to the town over the years with literally thousands travelling to Dingle each year to visit him.
His contribution to the area was noted some years ago as a copper statue was erected in his honour at the entrance to Dingle Pier.

A friend to all, Fungie's place in Kerry's history is firmly cemented if the smiles on the faces of the children who caught a glimpse of him last weekend in Dingle is anything to go by!

Dingle fishermen call for Government and EU action to save local fishing industry

The fishermen of Dingle took a stand this week on Dingle Pier, as they protested in solidarity with fishermen all over the country, drawing attention to the fact that while non-EU fish is being imported into Ireland to be sold and branded as 'Irish' fish; they are forced to dump large proportions of their catches to comply with EU quotas. Highlighting the dire state of Ireland's fishing economy, the peaceful protest was staged at Dingle Pier throughout Tuesday as the fishermen of West Kerry spoke out against rising diesel prices, the importation of non-EU fish into Ireland, the imposition of quotas and stringent EU regulation which they feel is about to extinguish one of Kerry's traditional industries.
"With all the talk about the Lisbon Treaty and what Europe has done for us, there has been nothing said about the state the Irish fishing industry is in, because of the EU" said the protesting fishermen's representative.
"In order to comply with the quotas set upon us by the EU, we have to dump a lot of our catches at sea or we will be penalised, this is insane."
Despite this surplus, the fishermen protesting say that thousands of tonnes of non-EU fish is being exported into the country; sold and branded as Irish fish. They are calling for the Government and the Department of the Marine to step in and negotiate some sort of traceability system similar to the one in place for Irish meat produce. "Now, fish from Non-EU countries is being exported into the country and being sold as Irish fish, yet we have to dump our own catches, it's a disgrace" said the spokesperson. Rising fuel costs was cited as another reason for the protest as the cost of fishing at, according to the fishermen, the price of fuelling their boats has doubled since this time last year due to the surges in Irish diesel and oil prices. "We just can't go on like this, someone needs to come to the table and start talking sooner rather than later or else Kerry's fishing industry will soon become a thing of the past. How can we condone a Europe that makes us dump our own fish while allowing non-EU imports to be sold in Ireland as Irish fish? How come we are restricted in fishing in our own waters while other fleets can plunder billions from our seas?" said the spokesperson. "Something has to be done or else the fishing industry in Kerry and the rest of the country is finished."

Local athletes to take on Cork, Dublin and New York City Marathons

Two West Kerry men are preparing to take on three major marathons over the next few months in an effort to raise much needed funds for Cystic Fibrosis Ireland. Veteran local runner, Martin Halloran from Ballyeightra, Dingle will be joined by Seán Cahillane, a Ballydavid man new to the marathon circuit, in an effort to complete both the Cork City Marathon this June and the Dublin City Marathon in October (making it Martin's fifth Dublin City Marathon and Seán's first), which are both 26.2 miles in length. Four days later, Martin will board a plane to head for the US where he will take part in the world renowned New York City Marathon, where 38,000 people, with many celebrities thrown into the mix, pound the streets of the Big Apple. Over the next few months, the lads will be busy preparing for the immense tasks ahead, training hard on wild and windy roads of West Kerry while launching a concerted drive to raise sponsorship for Cystic Fibrosis, which claimed two young lives over the past year and a half in the West, that of young woman Mary Hand of Dingle and teenager Paidí Grummel of Carrig. Seán and Martin train during the week and each Sunday they run from Baile na nGall to Dún Chaoin and back.
"The Cork City Marathon in June will be my first marathon, hopefully it will all go well and I'll be able to finish it!" said Seán. Martin is also looking forward to the challenges ahead, especially the New York City Marathon. "Its a lifelong dream to compete in the New York City Marathon" said Martin, who has completed the Dublin City Marathon an amazing four times over the past few years. Both runners are keen to raise as much as they can for the Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland and a number of sponsorship cards will be made available in local shops and outlets in the West Kerry area over the coming weeks.
